Bangkok (NNT/VNA) - Six Thai destinations have been recognized for their efforts in sustainable tourism as part of the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories initiative.

The global initiative spotlights destinations that have made progress in environmental conservation, community development, and responsible tourism.

The six selected locations include Wiang Phu Phiang Chae Haeng in Nan, U Thong Ancient city in Suphanburi, Songkhla city, Chiang Khan, Uthai Thani’s floating house community, and Hua Hin.

Wiang Phu Phiang Chae Haeng was recognized for reviving the traditional Hok Peng Festival, helping to promote year-round tourism in Nan province. U Thong Ancient City, once the capital of the Dvaravati Kingdom, has been developed into a tourist destination after transforming a disused mine into a Buddhist park. Songkhla city was commended for its efforts in preserving its cultural heritage through storytelling, as well as its push to become a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Chiang Khan, known for its historic wooden houses, introduced a local breakfast voucher programme to better connect tourists with local restaurants, promoting economic growth within the community. Uthai Thani’s floating house community, which embodies a 400-year-old riverside way of life, was recognized for efforts to preserve its culture despite challenges posed by drought. Hua Hin, Thailand’s oldest seaside resort town, has focused on achieving zero waste through community-led waste management efforts.

🎃 These destinations are examples of how communities across Thailand are working to maintain their cultural heritage and protect the environment while promoting tourism. The global celebration of these destinations will take place at the Green Destinations Global Conference 2024 in Chile, with further recognition to be announced at the ITB Berlin event in March 2025./.
