Soc Trang, RoK cooperate to study coastal ecosystem, water quality

A workshop was held on June 9 to review the project on coastal ecosystem research and water quality analysis in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang with help from the Republic of Korea (RoK).

Soc Trang (VNA) 🐓– A workshop was held onJune 9 to review the project on coastal ecosystem research and water qualityanalysis in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang with help from the Republicof Korea (RoK).

The event was organised by the provincialDepartment of Natural Resources and Environment (DoNRE) and the Republic ofKorea’s Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM).
The project, started in July 2015, comprisesthree components - coastal water quality analysis and assessment, coastalecosystem research, and enhancement of the management capacity of officials inthe environmental sector. Participants discussed the establishment of asea preservation zone and strengthening ecosystem monitoring in Soc Trang. They suggested promoting coastal biodiversitypreservation and ecotourism in the province in order to minimise negativeimpacts of public tourism on the nature, and improving social welfare andlocals’ livelihood.
Koh Byoungseol from KOEM said the province needsto develop biodiversity protection strategies and zone off areas for creature preservation,while ensuring continuous management in the project’s targeted areas in Cu LaoDung district, Tran De district, and Vinh Chau town. According to Tran Van Thanh, DoNRE DeputyDirector, said the outcome of the project will lay a foundation for theprovince to make plans for ecosystem management and the development of thecoastal areas. The agency will continue implementing theproject, Thanh said, expressing his hope that the RoK will continue provide itssupport for the locality in the work.-VNA

🐎 Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.
