Kien Giang (VNA) – Storm Pabuk brought big waves in waters offshore the southern province of Kien Giang, sinking dozens of boats in Tho Chau island commune, said the provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue.

According to initial report, more than 20 boats were sunk while being moored to a port, while two local fishing farms, two house roofs and some utility poles were damaged.

Chairman of Tho Chau commune People’s Committee Do Van Dung said the exact number of sunken boats has yet to be delivered because of strong waves.

Local authorities have joined hands with competent agencies to help local people bring ships to the shore and repair houses for affected people, as well as devise measures to overcome damage.

Authorities in Tho Chau commune also enhance communication work to raise public awareness to minimise the storm’s consequences.

As of 11am on January 4, tropical Storm Pabuk, the first to hit the East Sea this year, was 280 km southwest of Tho Chu island of Kien Giang province. Wind speeds at the eye reached up to 90 km per hour.

The storm is moving west-northwest at a speed of 15km per hour and expected to reach Thailand on January 5. It is forecast to cause rough seas and heavy rains in Vietnam’s southern localities, especially Ca Mau and Kien Giang.-VNA
