Thai, Malaysian leaders discuss security cooperation

Bangkok (VNA) – Thai PrimeMinister Prayut Chan-ocha and his Malaysian counterpart Mahathir Mohamaddiscussed security cooperation during talks in Thailand on October 24,especially in dealing with the insurgency in the south of Thailand that haskilled more than 7,000 in the last two decades.

Speaking to media following the talks,Mohamad pledged to do what he could to bring peace to neighbouring Thailand'sinsurgency-plagued south, saying that it is not just the case of talking ordrawing up treaties, but true cooperation between the two neighbours.

Chan-ocha said both sides better understandeach other’s concerns, and affirmed that peace talks between Bangkok andseparatists in the south will continue with the support of Malaysia.

He said both sides will expand collaborationin border security, economic development, anti-terrorism and prevention ofextremism and trans-national crimes.

The Malaysian PM is on a two-day visit toThailand from October 24, aiming to create a driving force for peace dialoguein southern Thailand.

The Malaysian government recently appointedformer Inspector General of Police Abdul Rahim Mohd Noor as facilitator for thepeace talks.-VNA
