Thai PM to join MRC summit in Siem Reap

Bangkok (NNT/VNA) – Thai Prime Minister PrayutChan-o-cha is scheduled to attend a Mekong River Commission (MRC) summit inCambodia, where he will be meeting with top leaders of Laos, Cambodia andVietnam, said Assistant Government Spokesman Col Athisit Chainuwat. 

He said the cabinet acknowledged the premier's agenda duringthe third MRC Summit, which will take place in Siem Reap, Cambodia, on April5. 

Top leaders of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam willjoin in the summit to endorse the Siem Reap Declaration to promote thepartnership between the four countries on water and natural resources managementand the sustainable development of the Mekong subregion. 

The projects for the integrated management of the Mekongsubregion include a feasibility study of a hydroelectricity project in MekongRiver and the planned cooperation with China, Myanmar, and other countries aswell as international organisations related to the water resources managementissue. 

The first MRC summit was held in 2010 in Prachaup Khiri Khanprovince where the Hua Hin Declaration promoting balanced and sustainabledevelopment of the subregion was endorsed. It was followed by the second one in2014 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, with the adoption of the Ho Chi MinhDeclaration promoting cross-border cooperation for water, energy, and foodsecurity under the context of climate change.-VNA
