Thailand’s government could delay holding a general election slated for 2017 if it causes damage to the country, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence MinisterPrawitWongsuwan said on November 25.

Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s government could delay holding a generalelection slated for 2017 if it causes damage to the country, Deputy PrimeMinister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said on November 25.
He saidthe plan to hold the next general election in 2017 remained intact, but he didnot rule out factors that could lead to a delay.
“The situation changes by day and by month. If wecan hold an election, we will. If an election cannot be held, why should weinsist on holding one and then cause damage?” Prawit said.
He made the remarks after a speculation that theelection, slated for late 2017 or early 2018, could be delayed due to the deathof King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
On November 23, Deputy Prime MinisterWissanu Krea-ngam said a 2017 election will definitely take place but a newgovernment might not be formed until 2018.
He said “unforeseeable factors”could make it unlikely for a new administration to be formed within 2017.-VNA
