Hanoi (VNA) - A total of 198traffic accidents occurred nationwide, killing 133 people and injuring 174others during the Lunar New Year (Tet) holidays between January 23-29nationwide.
The number of accidents represented adecrease of 10.8 percent, while the numbers of deaths and injured people fellby nearly 5 percent and 17.9 percent compared to the same period last year.
The traffic accidents mainly occurred on theroad, with only one accident reported on waterways, causing onedeath. There were no reports of rail accidents.
Also during the holidays, traffic policedealt with more than 19,900 violations of traffic rules, imposing fines worth19.3 billion VND.
To minimise traffic accidents and ensuretraffic safety at the end of the Tet holidays and New Year festivals, theMinistry of Public Security has ordered the heads of police departments inprovinces and cities to take drastic measures to prevent trafficcongestion and accidents on roads that lead to festival sites.
Traffic police were told to focus onpreventing traffic congestion at toll booths and gateways to major citiesincluding Hanoi and HCM City, the ministry said.
In other localities, traffic police wererequired to patrol major traffic routes, especially national highwaysand expressways, to deal with drink driving, driving in the wrong lane, drivingwithout helmets and carrying more people than permitted, the ministry said.
On inland waterways, safety conditions forpassengers must be checked, especially in areas with riverswhere festivals were taking place.
Additionally, traffic police departments inlocalities had to process complaints on violations relating totraffic congestion and carrying more passengers than permitted, the ministrysaid./.
The number of traffic accidents has fallen dramatically, just two weeks after the drink-driving law took, according to Major Gen. Le Xuan Duc, Deputy Director of the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security (MoPS).
A total of 1,300 traffic accidents occurred nationwide in the month to January 14, which killed 591 people and injured 968 others, according to the National Committee for Traffic Safety.
Thirty-one traffic accidents occurred, killing 23 and injuring 15 others on January 23 (the 29th day of the 12th lunar month), the first day of the week-long Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday.
