U Win Myint sworn in as Myanmar President

Hanoi (VNA) -꧑ Myanmar'sPresident-elect U Win Myint was sworn in to office on March 30 as Myanmar's10th president since 1948 at the session of the Union Parliament.

First Vice President-elect U MyintSwe and Second Vice President-elect Henry Van Thio also took the oath of officein the presence of Union Parliament Speaker U Mahn Win Khaing Than at theswearing-in ceremony, observed by State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi.

U Win Myint, 66, won the electionwith 403 “yes” votes as a total of 636 MPs cast their votes in the UnionParliament. He used to work as a lawyer. In 2012,U Win Myint, a member of the National League for Democracy (NLD), was electedas a parliament member to the House of Representatives. He became Speaker of the House ofRepresentatives in 2016. The presidential run was hosted bythe Union Parliament to fill the presidency vacancy left by U Htin Kyaw, whoannounced resignation last week, citing health as reason.-VNA
