Hanoi (VNA)💞 - Vietnam’s national domain “.vn” now ranks second in ASEAN in number, with over 660,000 registrations. The country is also among the global top ten in IPv6 adoption, with more than 65% of internet users accessing the web via IPv6.

On May 8 in Hanoi, the APAC DNS Forum 2025 - focusing on domain names and DNS servers in the Asia-Pacific region—opened with the theme: “An inclusive internet: Connecting people, shaping the future.” Running from May 7 to 9, the forum is hosted by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in collaboration with the Vietnam Internet Network Information Centre (VNNIC), under the Ministry of Science and Technology. Speaking on Vietnam’s progress in internet resource management, VNNIC Director Nguyen Hong Thang highlighted the country’s remarkable growth after more than 27 years of being connected to the global network.

Through efforts in managing the national top-level domain “.vn,” promoting DNSSEC security standards, supporting the transition to IPv6, and strengthening the national DNS and internet exchange infrastructure, Vietnam has now built a secure and reliable internet foundation. Thang noted that Vietnam currently ranks second in ASEAN with more than 660,000 registered “.vn” domains. The country is also among the top ten globally in IPv6 adoption, with over 65% of users accessing the internet via IPv6.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui Hoang Phuong stressed the importance of digital infrastructure as the foundation of digital transformation. “Internet infrastructure, including DNS, is a critical part of digital infrastructure. Ensuring the secure and reliable management of the national DNS system, and promoting widespread adoption of the ‘.vn’ domain, is essential to the development of the digital economy and digital society,” he said. “Vietnam is committed to partnering with the international community to develop an open, safe and inclusive internet. We welcome deeper collaboration with regional and global partners to shape a digital future for everyone,” the Deputy Minister added. In his remarks, Kurtis Lindqvist, President and CEO of ICANN, said the internet is a powerful tool for promoting peace, growth, prosperity, and cross-cultural understanding.

Citing ITU statistics, he noted that nearly 6 billion people around the world are now online. In the Asia-Pacific region, nearly 66% of the population had internet access as of 2024, and that number continues to grow. He described the Asia-Pacific as a dynamic and central force driving the global internet forward, and affirmed ICANN’s mission to support initiatives that bring more people online, overcome barriers, and unlock new opportunities. Throughout the forum, Vietnamese and international experts discussed initiatives and best practices for internet resource management, infrastructure development, and smart, safe, adaptive internet services—aligned with global trends in science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation. They also explored ways to apply emerging technologies such as DNSSEC, 5G/6G, IPv6, big data, cloud computing, AI, and blockchain to enhance the security, sustainability, and multilingual accessibility of the DNS infrastructure—helping to build a digital environment that is inclusive, human-centred, and equitable for all. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), founded in California on September 30, 1998, is responsible for coordinating key aspects of the internet’s technical infrastructure, including IP addresses, domain names, protocol parameters, and the DNS root system, which underpins the functioning of the entire internet./.
