Vietnamese, Australian defence ministers hold talks

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s Defence Minister Gen. Ngo Xuan Lich and his Australian counterpartMarise Payne agreed to consider the organisation of the first deputyministerial defence policy dialogue and Australia’s support for Vietnam’sdeployment of UN peace keeping forces during their talks in Hanoi on August 24.

Australia’s DefenceMinister Marise Payne is on an official visit to Vietnam on August 24-25. Thisis the fourth official visit to Vietnam by a defence minister of Australiasince the two countries set up defence ties in 1999, which realises bilateralcommitments to intensifying defence cooperation for peace, stability, andwealth of the region.

At the talks, the ministers discussed regional security issues of sharedconcern and orientations for bilateral defence cooperative activities in thecoming time.

They shared the view that the two countries’ defence cooperation is substantive,stable, and sustainable, and it is in line with the memorandum of understandingon defence cooperation inked in 2010.

Minister Payne thankedthe Vietnamese Defence Ministry for its support for Australia’s initiative tohold the ADMM annually, and asserted that Australia will continue contributingto the success of this important mechanism.

During her visit,Minister Payne will visit Company 871 and Commando Brigade 113.

The relations between Vietnam and Australia and their defence ministries aregrowing. The two sides are carrying out many productive cooperative activities,such as visit exchange, dialogue and consultation, training, maritime security,anti-terrorism, information sharing and flight safety. The two countries havefrequently consulted each other at multilateral forums and architectures, suchas ADMM, ARF, and EAS.-VNA
