Viettel eyes entry into digital services market

Hanoi (VNS/VNA) – TheViettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel) is set to become adigital service provider this year, having lined up a number of products andservices from the digital eco-system.

“To create a digital society,Viettel must do two things: manufacture products and services of industry 4.0standard and promote digitisation of the government,” said Gen Le Dang Dung, Chairmanof Viettel.

The country’s leading telecomsgroup is upgrading its 4G network to create infrastructure for the internet ofthings (IoT).

Viettel plans to offer 5Gservices in the first quarter of this year once the Government approves testingof 5G technical systems, and pilot business models that use 5G technology.

By next year its 5G broadbandnetwork would expand to meet the needs of businesses and socio-economicdevelopment.

Viettel has virtualised all corenetwork equipment and information technology infrastructure; transferred all ITapplications to cloud and is ready with mobile edge computing.

The company has set up five datacentres with international-standard Tier 3, soon to become Tier 4, whichenables millions of clients to use IoT at the same time.

It has researched, developed andapplied key industry 4.0 technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence(AI) and virtual reality (VR) into its IT systems to better serve customers.

The group has set up a cyber securitycompany to ensure information security and safety.

It has focused on researching andmanufacturing equipment used in digital networks like virtual core networks, 5Gbase transceiver stations, sensors, and AI products.

Last year the contribution ofdigital services, including content, media, IoT, and fintech, to the company’sturnover was 7.1 percent.

“Viettel will continue to developthe traditional telecom business and accelerate digital services,” Dung added.

Last , Viettel achieved aturnover of 234 trillion VND (10.2 billion USD), or 60 percent of that of theentire telecom industry, anda profit of 37.6 trillion VND (1.64 billion USD).

While 2018 was a challengingyear, with the Vietnamese telecom market saturating Viettel managed to achieve8 percent growth and its international investment increased by 20 percent.

Viettel was the top brand in Vietnamlast year and among the top 50 in the global telecom industry with a value ofnearly 3.2 billion USD, 23.7 percent higher than in 2017.

This year it targets growth of7.3 percent in turnover (251 trillion VND) and 4.6 percent in profit (39trillion VND).-VNS/VNA
