Ambassador meets Vietnamese Cambodians in Kampong Chhnang

Vietnamese Ambassador to Cambodia Vu Quang Minh on October 29 visited Vietnamese Cambodians in Kampong Chhnang province, who are set to be removed to other places under a resettlement plan of Cambodia.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – Vietnamese Ambassador to Cambodia VuQuang Minh on October 29 visited Vietnamese Cambodians in Kampong Chhnang province,who are set to be removed to other places under a resettlement plan ofCambodia.

Minh said that the Vietnamese Government and the Vietnamese-Cambodiancommunity support the Cambodian Government’s plan to resettle over 10,000 peopleliving on Tonle Sap Lake for environmental reasons and help them settle down.

He noted that at a meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc onOctober 11 in Indonesia, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen agreed with theformer’s proposals and then directed Kampong Chhang’s authorities to build a suitableroadmap for the resettlement of the targeted people to areas with necessary infrastructurefacilities and ensure their livelihoods.

The proposals were reiterated by Truong Thi Mai, Politburo member andChairwoman of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee’s Commission forMass Mobilisation during her visit to Cambodia from October 25-28.

Right after hearing the plan, the Vietnamese Embassy sent a dispatch to relevantagencies of Cambodia, reflecting the aspiration of the affected community and suggestingthe local administration to implement the directions of PM Hun Sen to make surethat the removed people would enjoy necessary facilities, environmentalsanitation and stable livelihoods.

At meetings, Vietnamese Cambodians in Boribo district and KampongChhnang city affirmed that they will observe the Cambodian Government’s planand thanked the Cambodian PM for his directions.

However, they pointed to poor conditions in the settlement area and askedthe local administration for permission to move to a new temporary settlement areawith basic living conditions or return to their former homes.

The ambassador pledged that the embassy and the Khmer-VietnamAssociation in Cambodia will continue submitting the community’s opinions toCambodian authorities.-VNA
