Bangkok (VNA) – Hundreds of Thai activists held a parade around the Victory Monumentin Ratchathewi district of Bangkok on January 6 to protest the ThaiGovernment’s proposal that the Election Commission delay the general election slatedfor February 24 due to worry that the activity coincides with the coronationceremony of King Rama X.
Protestors carried signs which read "We Want Election"and "Election only on Feb 24, 2019", chanting "No delay!"in unison.
Theyparaded the surrounding streets of the monument, singing the national anthembefore dissolving in the afternoon of the same day.
Leaderof the protest Siriwith Seritiwat said that the parade is just a beginning,adding that another protest has been planned in Ratchaprasong crossroad on January 8 if their demand is not satisfied.
Policeshowed up at the site to maintain order and ensure smooth traffic.
OnJanuary 2, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said that the general electiondate will remain unchanged, rejecting rumours that the government will postponethe election till after the coronation ceremony of King Rama X.
Asscheduled, 350 constituencies will be organized across the country to select150 members of the parliament. The results are expected to be announced aftertwo months.
Thaimedia said that the Palang Pracharath Party is working to ensure PM PrayutChan-o-cha will stay at the position after the election.
