Cambodia: CNRP President arrested for treason

– President of theopposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) Kem Sokha has been arrested oncharges of treason and espionage.

Cambodia’s Fresh News cited a statement of the CambodianGovernment as saying the CNRP leader was seized at his home at 00:35 am onSeptember 3 by the police.

The capture was made after Cambodia’s policefound a video broadcast by Cambodian Broadcasting Network (CBN) headquarteredin Australia and other evidence showing Kem Sokha and his accomplices secretlyconspired with foreigners to harm Cambodia.

The Cambodian Government described the above actas treason and espionage and said the court will handle this case according tothe country’s regulations.

Kem Sokha was elected as CNRP President in March2017 to replace Sam Rainsy who stepped down in the previous month.-VNA
