The Cambodian Government has planned new measures to tackle the financial effect of COVID-19 since January, the Khmer Times reported, quoting General Secretary of the Ministry of Economy and Finance Meas Soksensan.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – TheCambodian Government has planned new measures to tackle the financial effect ofCOVID-19 since January, the Khmer Times reported, quoting General Secretary ofthe Ministry of Economy and Finance Meas Soksensan.

Meas Soksensan said at the Council of Ministersthis week that as it is impossible to fully gauge the financial damage causedby the outbreak, the Cambodian Government will focus on supporting garment andtourism industries.

“The garment sector is affected more than othersectors, so we will facilitate the import of raw materials and mid-finishedcomponents for production and assembly in the country, ready for export,’’Measwas quoted by Khmer Times as saying.

He added that strengthening tax revenues isanother measure to strengthen the national income in the face of the fiscaldownturn.

Prime Minister Hun Sen said on February 25 thatCambodia’s economic growth in 2020 would not be at the same rate as previouslypredicted at 6.5 percent as the COVID-19 epidemic is affecting the country’seconomic pillars, especially tourism. The national economy is projected toexpand only about 6 percent this year.

The Cambodian Health Ministry said on March 5that local authorities had put 44 people under quarantine for having contactwith a Japanese man reportedly diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2.
