Cambodian PM: Ruling party wins majority in local elections

Phnom Penh (VNA)𝄹 - Cambodian PrimeMinister Hun Sen announced on June 5 that his ruling Cambodian People’s Party(CPP) has won the fourth commune elections, which was held one day earlier.

PM Hun Sen wrote on his Facebook page that,according to the informal figures, the turnout was 6,743,329, and the CPPreceived 3,529,400 votes equal to 51.39 percent. The Cambodian leader said in this year’selections, the CPP received 300,000 votes more than in the 2013 elections. Healso expressed his hope that the CPP will earn major of votes in the generalelections scheduled to take place in July 2018. This was the fourth commune elections ofCambodia since the first in 2002. Twelve political parties contested theelections, with the ruling CPP and the opposition Cambodia National RescueParty (CNRP) being the major contestants. Addressing a press conference later on June4, CNRP spokesman Yim Sovann admitted that the CNRP lost in the elections, asit won just 46 percent of the votes. The National Election Committee said preliminaryresults will be revealed on June 5, while official results will be publicisedon June 25. The commune elections are seen as a test forthe popularity of political parties ahead of the national elections in July2018.-VNA
