Can Tho strives to supply clean water for all people by 2025

Can Tho (VNA) –
The Mekong Delta cityof Can Tho is striving to increase the rate of people enabled to use cleanwater to 90 percent by 2020 and 100 percent by 2025.

At a working session with Can Tho Water Supply -Sewerage Joint Stock Company on March 6, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’sCommittee Dao Anh Dung asked the company to arrange investment to improve watersupply systems.

Dung said he has assigned the provincialDepartment of Construction to work with the Department of Finance and the Departmentof Agriculture and Rural Development in to submit plans for merging rural watersupply units in Binh Thuy and Cai Rang districts in April.

The company needs to address clean water-relatedissues for local residents in Cai Rang district, and then Phong Dien district,where the rate of people getting access to clean water remains low, Dung said.

Local authorities have policies to reduce thepayment for clean water for poor and nearly-poor households, he added.

The Can Tho Water Supply - Sewerage JSC and itstwo subsidiaries, namely Tra Noc – O Mon and Thot Not, are supplying water fora large majority of districts in Can Tho.

The total water supplied in 2018 was nearly117,000 cubic metres per day, and the rate of water loss was 23.5 percent,which is expected to be gradually reduced to 15 percent by 2020.

At present, approximately 90 percent of thecity’s population is provided with clean water.-VNA
