Can Tho: traffic accidents on the rise

The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho saw a surge in road accidents between December 16, 2016 and May 3, 2017, with 31 accidents happening in the period, up nine from the same period last year.

Can Tho (VNA) –The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho sawa surge in road accidents between December 16, 2016 and May 3, 2017, with 31 accidentshappening in the period, up nine from the same period last year.

The figure was reported at a working session of the NationalTraffic Safety Committee in Can Tho on May 23.

Causes of the accidents were said to be mainly traffic lawviolations, such as driving on the wrong lane and drunk driving.

Local police said problematic transport infrastructure, likenarrow or damaged roads, and ill management of road construction sites are alsoto be blamed for increasing accidents.

Tran Van Tam, head of the Can Tho traffic police department,noted that new rules allowing higher speed on highways is another reason behindthe surging accidents.

Vice Chairman of the National Committee for Traffic SafetyKhuat Viet Hung asked the city to give priority to clearing hotspots of trafficaccidents in the plan on road maintenance this year. -VNA
