Tien Giang (VNA)ಞ – The Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang is stepping up efforts to eliminate temporary and rundown houses, with clear responsibilities assigned at all levels to encourage community involvement.

In line with the national campaign to remove substandard housing by 2025, the provincial Party Committee's Standing Board has formed a steering committee led by Nguyen Van Danh, Secretary of the Party Committee. Steering committees at the provincial, district, and commune levels have also been established, each with specific tasks assigned to members. According to the provincial People’s Committee, 485 homes for policy beneficiaries, families of war martyrs, and low-income households will be supported. Of these, 284 new homes will be built, and 201 existing ones repaired, with a total budget of 24.1 billion VND (about 984,000 USD). As of March 6, construction had started on 166 houses, with 32 already completed. In Cai Lay district, 88 households—including poor and near-poor families, as well as policy beneficiaries—are in need of housing support. The total budget for these homes is 4.6 billion VND (180,000 USD) from the state. So far, 81 of the 88 houses have been started, with the district aiming for completion by April 30, 2025. Huynh Vu Phuong, Deputy Secretary of the district Party Committee, Chairman of the Cai Lay People’s Committee, and head of the district's steering committee for eliminating substandard housing, highlighted the importance of the initiative. He noted that local authorities have actively mobilised donations and volunteer labour to help with the project. In Go Cong Tay district, four newly built houses were recently handed over to disadvantaged families. Each house, ranging from 36 to 50 square meters, features solid walls, metal roofing, and proper sanitation facilities. The cost per house is 200 million VND (7,850 USD), with 50 million VND contributed by the Tien Giang Petroleum Company. Le Thi Hon, a resident of Dong Son commune, expressed her gratitude for the support from authorities and donors. She said that the new, well-constructed house has given her family much-needed stability and comfort. Local authorities across Tien Giang province are continuing to assess and identify households in need of housing assistance. The initiative, which is expected to be completed by September, aims to improve living conditions, reduce poverty, and contribute to the province’s goal of building new-style rural areas by year-end./.
