WB project benefits over 1.1 million people in Mekong Delta
More than 1.1 million people have benefited from a World Bank (WB)-funded project on upgrading urban areas in the Mekong Delta region after six years of implementation.
Can Tho (VNA) – More than 1.1 million people have benefitedfrom a World Bank (WB)-funded project on upgrading urban areas in the MekongDelta region after six years of implementation.
The information was revealed at a meeting to review the Vietnam - Mekong Delta Region Urban Upgrading Project held inCan Tho city on December 18.
As part of the Vietnam National Urban Upgrading Programme until 2020, theproject had a total investment of 398 million USD, with 292 million USD sourcedfrom WB loans and the remainder coming from the Vietnamese government.
It aimed to improvestandards of living for poor residents in urban areas, while boostingsustainable development in the Mekong Delta.
The project wasimplemented between 2012 and 2018 in six Mekong Delta cities, including My Thoin Tien Giang province, Ca Mau in Ca Mau province, Tra Vinh in Tra Vinhprovince, Cao Lanh in Dong Thap province, Rach Gia in Kien Giang province, andCan Tho city.
It comprised five components: upgrading tertiary infrastructure in low incomeareas, supporting primary and secondary infrastructure, resettlement sites,project implementation and management, and technical support for the ConstructionMinistry to carry out the Vietnam National Urban Upgrading Programme andcoordinate the Vietnam - Mekong Delta Region Urban Upgrading Project.
The project completed the upgrading of all 114 low income areas (LIAs), builtand upgraded 214 km of roads and 374 km of sewers in LIAs.
More than 40,000 households were connected to metered water supply system while49 schools were built and upgraded, directly benefiting 35,000 teachers andstudents.-VNA
Provinces in the Mekong Delta that grow coconut are setting up cooperative teams and finding buyers to help farmers recover from low prices over the last 12 months.
Long An province led localities in the Mekong Delta region in budget collection in 2018, which hit over 13.8 trillion VND (over 595 million USD), 3.8 trillion VND higher than the target set for the year.
Ecosystem-based solutions are vitally important for the Mekong Delta to adapt to climate change in the decades to come, speakers said at a seminar held in Can Tho over the weekend.
The programmes have brought about positive changes to rural infrastructure, comprehensively improved the material and spiritual lives of farmers, and contributed to Vietnam's economic restructuring, said PM Pham Minh Chinh.
The festival highlighted the contributions and robust development of Vietnam's revolutionary press over the past century while promoting press products and showcasing the creativity of Vietnamese journalists.
The programme on sustainable poverty reduction has achieved its annual targets for reducing the poverty rate as assigned by the National Assembly and the Government. It has fulfilled five specific objectives and five five-year goals, and met nine out of 12 indicators related to addressing basic social service shortages.
