Cambodian NA passes amendments to election laws

The Cambodian National Assembly (NA) passed amendments to four laws on elections, which are related to the distribution of seats at the parliament and councils at all levels if the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) is dissolved.

Hanoi (VNA) – The Cambodian National Assembly (NA) passed amendmentsto four laws on elections, which are related to the distribution of seats atthe parliament and councils at all levels if the Cambodia National Rescue Party(CNRP) is dissolved.

With the approval of 67 of 123 lawmakers, the NA passed the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP)-supported amendmentsto the four laws on elections of the National Assembly and Senate as well asprovincial, municipal, district and commune councils.

Under the new laws, if a political party abandons its seats, isdelisted, is disbanded or dissolved, the number of seats of that party will bedistributed to other parties running for the organisations. Fifty-five CNRPlawmakers boycotted the session.

After receiving CPP lawmakers’ proposals on making changes on four laws, the NAStanding Committee on October 12 asked the NA’s Legislation and JusticeCommission to review the issue.

Cambodia’s Ministry of the Interior on October 6filed a complaint to the Supreme Court, requesting the dissolution of theopposition CNRP. Earlier, the Cambodian Youth Party and the Funcinpec Partyfiled complaints to the Ministry of the Interior, asking for the dissolution ofthe CNRP after its leader Kem Sokha was charged with treason.-VNA
